DJI Osmo Mobile 6 vs DJI Osmo Mobile 5: Should You Upgrade?

Accessories

DJI is dropping bombs one after another, first, they launched a ChineWhoop-style drone, Avata, then Action 3, and now Osmo Mobile 6. It offers a compact and foldable design like its predecessors. Also, it boasts some new features to boost your shooting capabilities. The OM 5 had quite some changes from OM 4 in addition to a built-in extension rod and sleeker design. Let’s see who wins the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 vs DJI Osmo Mobile 5 battle.

But what about the OM 6? Are there any big changes compared to OM 5? Let’s find out in this article, as we are going to put them to the test.

Design

The OM 6 is pretty much identical to OM5, but a lovely new shade of darker color gives it a much more professional look. It has the same foldable form factor, just like the OM 5. Both gimbals come with a quick-release magnetic clamp, which makes attaching a smartphone easier than ever. However, the OM 6 can hold larger or heavier phones even with a protective case. Also, DJI kept the same built-in extension rod as the OM 5 that you can use to get drone-like footage. Interestingly, when you unfold the OM 6, it will automatically turn on, and when you fold it again, it will go off, pretty nuts. But if you want to turn it on manually, just long-press the M button, and you are ready to mount your smartphone.

Camera

Over the past few years, smartphone camera has come a long way, providing better low-light performance and improved stability. With the latest DJI OM 6, you can take the stability even further due to its 3-axis stabilization. The OM 6 also comes with upgraded ActiveTrack 5.0 instead of ActiveTrack 4.0, which you can find on OM 5. Plus, if you have an iPhone and when you snap it to the OM 6, the DJI Mimo app pops up automatically, allowing you to start recording as soon as possible. Both gimbals have similar shooting modes, like Follow, Tilt Locked, FPV, and SpinShot. You can also make your footage more creative with Timelapse, DynamicZoom, Gesture Control, and Panorama. Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about bad lighting, because both gimbals support DJI OM Fill Light Clamp. But, with the DJI OM 6, you can now use DJI Mic to elevate your content to a new level.

Battery and Features

According to DJI, the Osmo Mobile 6 and 5 come with a 1000 mAh battery. With that battery capacity, both gimbals can deliver up to 6 hours and 24 minutes of runtime on a single charge, as well as can be charged using a USB-C port.

Anyway, the OM 6 features a new wheel control on the left side that allows you to control zooming and focusing effortlessly. Another cool and effective upgrade for the OM 6 is a small yet bright display. Basically, it works as a status panel to show the battery life and modes at a glance. Whereas the OM 5 lacks it, in fact, none of the previous gen Osmo mobile featured it.

Final Verdict

Alright, after thoroughly examining the similarities and differences between the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 vs DJI Osmo Mobile 5, the burning question remains: which one is the optimal investment for both you and your wallet?

Well, if you happen to own an older DJI Osmo Mobile gimbal predating the DJI OM5, or if you’re venturing into the world of smartphone stabilizers for the first time, rest assured that the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is an excellent choice. As the latest and most advanced offering from DJI, the OM6 boasts top-notch features and innovation.

Already in possession of the previous-generation DJI OM5? Fantastic! The OM5 remains one of the finest smartphone gimbals available today, and DJI continues to support it through updates to the DJI Mimo app. However, if enticing new features like Quick Launch, ActiveTrack 5.0, and the revamped status panel have ignited your desire for an upgrade, by all means, go for it! But if not, rest assured that the OM5 will continue to deliver exceptional results for you to share on social media and beyond.

In the end – “Both DJI Osmo Mobile 6 and 5 look almost identical, but the OM 6 now has a tiny display and side wheel to give you more control over footage. You will also get ActiveTrack 5.0 in the OM 6 and improved stability compared to OM 5.”
